Crypto and Travel Rule Vocabulary

CASP (Crypto-Asset Service Providers): CASP is a term used in MiCA regulation for entities that provide crypto asset services listed in MiCA.

FATF (Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering): FATF is the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog. It sets international standards that aim to prevent these illegal activities and the harm they cause to society.

Hosted Wallet / Custodial Wallet: A wallet that is managed by a service provider, such as an exchange, marketplace, or a shop. If you only have a wallet number but do not own the private keys, then the wallet is Hosted / Custodial. Coinmotion wallets are Custodial / Hosted wallets. 

MiCa: MiCA is a regulatory framework set out by the European Union aimed at establishing a clear and harmonized set of rules for crypto-assets across EU member states.

Private Wallet: A wallet that you fully control and own the private key. It can be a cold wallet, such as Ledger or Trezor, or a software wallet like Metamask. Also known as self-hosted wallet or non-custodial wallet.

Travel Rule: The Travel Rule is a global framework that requires financial institutions and virtual asset service providers to share specific information about the sender and recipient with each other when executing cryptocurrency transactions. In the European Union the Travel Rule has been implemented by Transfer of Funds regulation.

VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider): VASPs are companies providing virtual asset services. Depending on the country of origin VASPs can be regulated or not.
